Chipmunk food (safe and unsafe)
« on: June 13, 2010, 08:07:18 PM »
I have seen a lot of threads listing food for chipmunks and thought maybe we could compile a single list that could maybe used as reference for everyone.  I am happy to start it and update it so all the relevant info stays within the first post.  Maybe everyone could list what they give their chips that they know is safe to eat and also we could list what is unsafe to help people avoid feeding their chipmunks the unsafe foods.  Maybe something like below that is updated for the benefit of everyone.??

Hi, sunflower seeds and peanuts are safe but too many can cause Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) and cause them to get fat

Good information, I will give it a few days for people to add to the list and I will sort the list out and add that info into the list.

MDB is a threat to chips but if they get a balanced diet  of dry food fresh food and live food it shouldn't become a problem.  I feed my chips a regular diet of chipmunk mix with fresh fruit and veg  and a weekly injection of cream filled bugs

Not good if your a bug but great if you are a chippy lol

Tea? Pizza?  ;D

Cream filled bugs Chris! your chippies are spoilt lol

Tomatoes and boiled eggs (cold) balance out well against nuts.

Its strawberry season go to your local PYO and collect a punnet for the chips they love them, then soon after it will become  raspberry and blackberry PYO they love those too
And if you live near a wheat field pick fresh wheat and feed them that. Lots of free treats if you live in a rural area

my two like
apple,
pear,
raspberries,
blackberries,
grapes,
banana,
strawberries,
raisins,

they love hazlenuts and shelled peanuts usually the first things they go for  :laughing7:

they also like millet sprays occasionally
and also little bit of rusk biscuit (i usually soak it in a bit of milk and pre boiled water (half and half) first to stop it swelling to much in their bellies) only a treat occasionally they seem to love it (my son not so much, he wants his biscuit lol) hipp do a full organic one in little fingers so all natural and no need to worry about additives. they are so much cheaper and smaller than farleys rusks

frozen bell peppers run under water to take the instant cold off (mine only seem to eat the green ones) love it when its hot
baby sweetcorn

i have been wondering does any one know if sweet potato and butter nut squash are ok for them?

known as monkey nuts here as well, I know I live in a really remote part of mainland uk (Lincolnshire) but its a great area for getting free food for chips. But don't tell the farmer  :P
