no show!!
« on: September 06, 2008, 08:00:07 PM »
after waiting another day for Timmy to show, i went looking!. i found him- alive!! thank goodness. in the end of a pipe high up where he had made a nest. and Sprite actually goes though it as it is in a corner of 2 connected tubes. he wasn't keen to come out but with some gentle persuasion he did. Sprite was none to happy though and chased him around the Avery. i could see that Timmy was not hurt in any way and had not been in a fight!. he is however half the size of his brother Sprite.looks small though not starved I'm not sure what a starved chipmunk looks like.  i did not find any food stored in Timmy's nest and am concerned that he will not come out for fear of Sprite. (am i being over protected?? will he find food when he's hungry? )their house is quite large 6' wide x 4' deep x 7' high. with many nooks and cranny's and places to hide. i think i will spend more time out side the cage patently watching and waiting. any other ideas anyone??

Hi Sheila

I don't think you have a problem with aviary size it's plenty big enough for two chips. I also don't think you're being over protective, fighting can be very serious, and lead to fatal actions. It would be helpful to know the history of these two, are they brothers, and have they always lived together? Did they come from a pet shop or a breeder?

I would not be too worried at this stage that Timmy is a different size, with mine there is quite a difference in their sizes, even those born on the same day. But from what you say so far there is a problem, with Sprite throwing his weight around a bit too much. Try to find out if they both end up in the same nestbox at night. This might seem odd, but even those that seem to hate each other during the day can often choose to spend the night together. What I think you have to judge is are they just sorting themselves out as to who is dominant, or is the fighting really bad and threatening Timmys' life. They all have squabbles, but a real fight means you need to take action. A real fight is when they roll around together in a furious ball, this is where ears get ripped and noses get bloodied. Squabbling is where one will snap at another but does not pursue a chase once the weaker one has moved away.

One other thing I have found, chipmunks like Timmy can completely change their personality once they have been separated from their aggressor. In the end of the day this is only a decision you can make from your own observations, but be prepared to have to make a decision to separate them, for the sake of Timmys' quality of life. I'm not saying you're there yet, as you have not had them that long, but keep a close eye on them, and see if you can work out what's going on, and let us know.

I got Sprite & Timmy from a reputable pet shop (Portons Pets at Porton) between Salisbury & Andover. Its a large Pet and aquatics shop- high quality stock and well managed and cared for pets. they were from the same litter.

my Patience has paid off!! i have seen Timmy out and a bout. he has made a small nest for himself within a drain pipe(it's a upside down long length of guttering which my hubbie drilled 3 large holes in for them to run in and out but Timmy is nesting in the end of it. he still runs and hides when i go in the cage but I'm happy that I've seen in a few times. he seems to keep out of Sprits way will look to see about adding photos when i have time. i have one of Timmy down a tube. on going to a garden centre we picked up some plastic tree supports about 5' long Sprite loves bombing through them. Sprite comes to me now when i go in and i can tickle him (i must addmitt i bribe him with a peanut to do so. (not to many mind)
question- can they see in the dark?? the shed they are housed in has lighting on a timer to extend the light hours it then goes to dimmer before going out altogether( we had birds in there before but they have a new aviary) is this OK for Chips or is natural day light enough? bearing in mind they are in a shed. my family think I'm sad but my grandson can't wait to see them. after only a week they have made me late- had cold coffees and hours sat in a shed but I love them.
