no show Timmy
« on: September 13, 2008, 06:38:45 AM »
I got Sprite & Timmy from a reputable pet shop (Portons Pets at Porton) between Salisbury & Andover. Its a large Pet and aquatics shop- high quality stock and well managed and cared for pets. they were from the same litter.

my Patience has paid off!! i have seen Timmy out and a bout. he has made a small nest for himself within a drain pipe(it's a upside down long length of guttering which my hubbie drilled 3 large holes in for them to run in and out but Timmy is nesting in the end of it. he still runs and hides when i go in the cage but I'm happy that I've seen in a few times. he seems to keep out of Sprits way will look to see about adding photos when i have time. i have one of Timmy down a tube. on going to a garden centre we picked up some plastic tree supports about 5' long Sprite loves bombing through them. Sprite comes to me now when i go in and i can tickle him (i must addmitt i bribe him with a peanut to do so. (not to many mind)
question- can they see in the dark?? the shed they are housed in has lighting on a timer to extend the light hours it then goes to dimmer before going out altogether( we had birds in there before but they have a new aviary) is this OK for Chips or is natural day light enough? bearing in mind they are in a shed. my family think I'm sad but my grandson can't wait to see them. after only a week they have made me late- had cold coffees and hours sat in a shed but I love them.

Thanks for getting back to me and others reading this, it great to know how things go. It sounds now that things are getting better. So they are brothers, that's good to know as it must mean they have been brought up together, plus the home you have given them is likely to be bigger than the pet could have provided.

If you recommend Portons Pets I'll try to find if they have a website and add them to the links page, as lots of people find it hard to get chipmunks.

Timmy sounds as if he's settling in more, given a choice chipmunks do seem to prefer nesting in tubes over the usual type of nest boxes. Perhaps now that Sprite has established his dominance he will leave Timmy alone, and would probably rather have the company than be alone.

With seeing in the dark, I don't think they have especially super night vision such as an owl, but I have seen mine get up in the dark and manage to navigate around. So I would make a guess and say their vision at night is about the same as ours. BTW, they do need access to sunlight, sounds daft but sunbathing is a big thing with Chipmunks. I've found with mine, they will go off to bed early if I'm not around. But if I'm with them, a lot of mine will stay up until 8pm. So I think they actually like human company, or at least their owners.

People might disagree with me here, but I think you can use as many peanuts as you want at this taming stage. None of mine have just sat there eating one after another, when they have eaten one or two the rest are eagerly taken to be hidden. So I don't think you run a risk of over feeding them on peanuts. Their body clocks are telling them to store as much food as they can before winter. Everyone says you should start to tame them as soon as you can, so get on in there. The only danger food I know of for over feeding are the live worms, which are very rich, so they do need to be rationed.

Have fun this weekend watching them, a warning though, they can take over your life. Since I got chippies I'm often late, struggle to get any work done, and go for days without knowing what's happened in the world. They are just so captivating, and they know it. This post took much longer to write than it would have done to read, as Toto wanted to play hide and seek.

Just wanted to add my chipmunks also get up during the night for a drink or a feed, but i think this depends on what time they actually retired for the night, If it goes darker inside your shed earlier than it does outside then i think the dimmer light you have sounds a great idea, Make sure they have good ventilation too.

Since starting with chipmunks i very quickly became obsessed & i have to say they are my world now, I can easily sit & watch them for hours.

My love for them became much more when i 1st bred them, I was amazed & have been ever since.
