Aggression in the sleeping house
« on: November 02, 2009, 09:54:04 PM »
I have a big problem. About a week or two ago Bailey who always slept in the aviary house started to sleep in the hammock outside the house. He did sleep a few days in the nest box but then went back to the hammock. I've watched him the last few days he tries to get in the house first before resorting to the hammock. It appears that he wants to sleep in the house but if he doesn't get his timing right he gets chased out by Abigail. He tries repeatedly to sneak in without being seen or heard by Abigail. If he is lucky and it is early enough before dark he can sneak in quietly even if he has been chased out several times by now she's asleep so unaware. Most days though she hears him and chases him out just as its getting dark. Once chased out he prepares his bed in the hammock before dark, he'll then one more time try to enter the house just as its getting dark. If she hears him he then goes back to the hammock and often then falls asleep as he's so tired by now. If he does wake up after its dark he is then too nervous to go into the house. The cold weather has arrived, it went down to 7.5 degrees c yesterday so i am more worried about him sleeping outside. About 17.30 today i went in the aviary and he was fast asleep in the hammock so i carefully removed it with him in it and hung it up into the house and then left him sleeping in there. About two hours later i checked and he was in the nest box. I don't like the fact he is being bullied out of the house, it is a large house with separate nest boxes all with warm bedding and food and there’s room for many Chipmunks yet Abigail does her best to keep him out. Does anybody know what i can do? This doesn't happen with the Dilutes despite the fact they fight too. I'm starting to wonder will any of these Chipmunks ever get on. I really don't understand why theres all this aggression they all have so much space and comfortable large sleeping area and always get plenty of food and bedding. It is the two females who are constantly chasing the boys and attacking them so far injuries have been minimum we've been lucky. I have never had aggression as bad as this with Chipmunks. All my other Chipmunks got on very well. I am very upset about this as we have worked hard to give them a good home.
