More Pics of Scrat & Chip
« on: November 12, 2008, 07:21:27 PM »
Hi again people,

Well I decided to post a few more pictures of Scrat & Chip now we have become more used to each other.
They are well demanding to come out of their cage when we go in the room lol
I also include a picture of their cage which is temporary until the spring when we hope to have built them a proper outdoor aviary.
I guess having them indoors through the winter will allow them to get used to us and also let them acclimatise to their new home outside in the spring for a good 6 months before the following winter.

I see your going to make an outdoor enclosure, whats your plans? Is it high, long, wide? What stuff you putting in it?
Just curious thats all.

I see you live in Lincolnshire , I wonder if your my closest forum neighbour as I'm in "ull" across the bridge.

I like the first photo too, but I think the second one shows just how agile chipmunks can be. Hanging off a set of keys upside down is nothing for them.
Yes I think having them indoors for the winter will certainly get them tame, and I like the tall aviary you've got them in.
You certainly have a knack for photographing chipmunks. I noticed in your last set you avoided focusing on the aviary mesh and got the chipmunks in focus, great stuff.

The aviary they are in is a combination of 2 smaller cages ripped apart and joined together.
When I got Scrat they sold me a cage which they said would be suitable for 2 chipmunks. Picture attached.
When we got chip the next day and put him in the cage we realised that the cage just wasn't suitable for 2 chippies to live happily together in so we rushed out bought another cage the same as before. When we rebuilt it we took all the floors out and the top off the original cage and placed the new cage on top leaving only the floor at the top where the nestboxes are now situated. Result much bigger cage with 2 contented chipmunks living in it ;D
I'm not sure how big the new aviary will be yet but we want it close to the house so we can see them from the living room window.
The pictures have all been taken with a Nikon D40 DSLR camera which does deliver some excellent photo's.

I think most of the few number of books on keeping chipmunks say a much small aviary is OK for a couple of chipmunks, something like about 1 mtr high and 60 cm deep. I really do wonder if the authors have really kept and spent time with chipmunks to see what they really need. Chipmunks are so bonkers and lively it's hard to get that across to anyone who's never seen one.

I got a Nikon older one than yours, but the speed of these cameras makes all the difference with such an active subject. I spent quite a bit on the additional flash £300 or so, but it has really helped.

Your photos are still there for me. But I've noticed on this and other boards, sometimes when you go to the page you see no photos that you know are there, not even a broken image. I only use FireFox for my day to day surfing, so don't know it it's connected with that, as I notice that somtimes FireFox will not bother with the style sheet unless I force a page reload.
