Sleepy Chippy
« on: March 19, 2010, 09:32:37 PM »
Hi

I'm new to owning chipmunks i currently have just one, Ive owned Mac for 2 months now but ever since i got him he seems to be in a routine of getting up at 6am and going to sleep at 4pm then not re appearing till the following morning at 6am again.  Is this normal he lives indoors in my bedroom not outside where its cold, 14 hours seems like a long time to be in his nest box i thought maybe he was bored, but he seems fine in the day and hes out of his cage alot as i currently have no job, I'm planning on getting him a friend in may as i cant find any chips available right now.

Thanks in advance

Chris

Hi there,
Yes this is normal, and you will notice that as the summer comes so he will stay out longer,
   ps where bouts are you,
As I have found that chipmunks that are up north seem to be about 2/3 weeks in front of us down here in the south?
           ok

Hi

I have two and they are up from 8am till about 4-5pm at the moment. In winter times its 9am till about 3-4pm for the female. The male goes to hibernation in the winter you believe it or not and he is a indoor chipmunk. He goes to sleep November time and wakes up end of January beginning of Feb. I had a friend looking after them for two weeks one and before we were due home she texted me if it was normal for one of them not coming out at all. She thought he was dead.
The first winter when he went to sleep we were not sure what was happening so we had a look in the box and woke him up from his deep sleep and he looked  like he was drugged up. Couldn't climb or walk for about 20 minutes, shaking a lot and very disorientated. We learned a lesson not to wake him up when he is in hibernation.
