Mummy behaviour
« on: March 11, 2010, 02:44:26 PM »
Hi guys,

Chip had her first litter at the end of feb and the babies are 2 weeks old tomorrow. I've just got a question abotu normal behaviour for the mom as this is my first litter too. The first few days after the birth, chip was obviously not as active as normal, but came out her nesting box quite regularly for drink and food. Since separating the male from her though (they started to fight), I've seen less and less of her. Obviosuly I don't watch her box like a hawk because that's not possible, but at my best guess, she comes out for a bit in the morning and then again in the evening ( I can tell by her food being eaten and her little poops (gross, I know)). I've not seen her for a few days now though because we keep missing each other, and I don't want to disturb her while she's in the box. Is it normal for new mums to stay in the nesting box for the majority of the time? I can still hear the sqeaks so am pretty sure the babies are ok.

Also, would it be detrimental for me to check in the box while she's in there. I don't want to upset her, but I'd very much like to check she and the babies are ok as I've not seen her  :dontknow:

Any advice welcome! Thanks

one of my mums is always with her babies, but the other one is not so motherly should i say lol she washes and feeds them but she doesnt even sleep with them now, but as this is her first litter she may just not know what she's doing properly, plus she lost her mate just before peregnancy, but they all seem fine, they were getting a bit cool without mum so i put a little fleecy thing over them and she just goes in and does what she needs, and also she takes them out alot and does leave them lying around occasionally, but i just keep a close eye on her and make sure they're where they're supposed to be  lol so as long as your mum is feeding n drinking and babies are squeaking they should be fine. try putting some cut up apple in and blow the smell in her nesting box or peanut butter,  :dontknow: my bitsy comes straight out to see what i'v got when i do that lol
my nesting boxes are coloured plastic houses (actually they are chinchilla sand boxes really) so i can see through them to keep an eye on them. my bitsy is very friendly so she lets me put my hand in, but the other one (angel) wouldn't tolerate my hand in while she's in there,  :cussing:  but she'll let me take the babies when she's running about.

I wouldn't worry as long as you can still hear squeaking.  Fidget is an old hand at this baby rearing thing and she would have days where I didn't see her and other days when she never seemed to be in the nest.....   What sort of nest box do you have?   does it have a lift up lid?

It does have a lift up lid, yes.

She's out at the moment and I've checked in and all babies are fine (although the babies did have a moan at me picking them up - I think they may have been sleeping!!). I think Chip just must be really motherly and so spends a lot of time with the babies. It's just worrying when I don't see her for so long because I'm so used to her being the active one, and she won't even come out the cage at the mo for a free run around!

Thanks guys!  :icon_thumleft:

I got up extra early this morning to see if I could catch Chip on her morning stroll and she was up and about. Had a check in on the babies, and havd a huge major panic... there were only 7 babies, not 8!!! I was convinced we'd lost one overnight, but searched a little more and found the litte blighter had crawled to a lonely corner of the box. He was pretty chilly compared with the others so I warmed him up nicely and made sure he went back in with the others! The babies are definitely a lot more active now! Their squeaks have also changed pitch and are less requent. My brood is growing up!

Chip's now back in with the little'uns and I don't expect to see her again until later this evening.

Anyway, here's a picture of the babies. they're now 2 weeks old!

aww I'm so sorry to hear that!! I've been lucky really. I have quite a big litter and all of them have survived. Chips like octo-mom only she's fantastic at her job!

R.I.P little agouti  :angel11:
