Moving with chipmunks
« on: May 11, 2010, 08:46:20 PM »
I was wondering if any of you could help or give advice.
Me and my husband are moving in few weeks and we would like to make the move as easy as possible for our chipmunks, don't want to stress them out too much. :nono:
I was wondering if any of you guys have had experienced a move with a chipmunk and what is the best for them to do. ???
We were thinking to move them night time and put a cover over the cage so they can't see the objects moving around them so they don't get freecked out.
Thanks
Judy

Hi Judy. Ive heard of people being concerned about moving their chipmunks around, and I have to tell you, I dont really believe it. There is 57 miles between me and my girlfriend. If I decide to stay down for a few days i bring the chippies with me. Each and every time i bring them I have their cage(my first one), sitting on the passenger seat beside me. Every single time they climb to the top to watch everything. As you well know, they are very curious little creatures, and having motorway and sky and trees all the way seems to amaze them. I own a few cars, quiet conservative comfortable to the other extreme, loud fast and uncomfortable. What im trying to say is that they didnt mind the various cars for traveling. They might head back down for a quick snooze but straight back up. Absolutely no negatives from my travelling with them. Ive traveled at least 20 times. So from my little bit of experience in this field, I would not worry. :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

Ohh well congrats on ur new home hope it's not too stressful for you! I hated moving!! Lots of sorting.... I waited like you mentioned, they were the last too move as well as the fishtank! I got everything settled first then waiting till they were all nested at night! Moved them box by box into indoor cages in which I kept them in till morning while my husband put up the outdoor aviary at first light! I worried about the whole moving and the car journey but the only thing They seemed to be worried about was getting bk outside ! The move went well!! Just keep them covered, if ur worried and moving in the day.... Hope tht helps xx Sarah-jane. Hope all goes well.  :icon_thumleft:

hi last time we moved we took our chins/ hamster /rabbits  nd budgie in their cages to  a freinds for couple of days then picked them up after all the heavy  furniture and boxes  had been taked in as this is much less stress for them,  as you are aware  movers make a lot of noise and have little regard for pets  as only a job to most,  cages get knocked and animals could escape  not only that you will know they are safe and then everything is under your control,
trust me its the best way we had 4 dogs to move 9 cats  2 bunnies, a hamster 6 chinchilla and a budgie  at this time. and it was hard enough taking the dogs and cats let alone any small furries. good luck with the move
love all animals and have been involved in rescue for 17 years plus,

Good luck,

I would have thought moving them in the day would be less stressful cos they can see what's going on and can you imagine being in your bed asleep and then suddenly it lifts up and is swaying when your still half asleep :sleepy2: if you see where i'm coming from  :icon_thumleft: Hope I don't sound like I've put a downer on it  :hello:

Thanks DaveB

Of course not. That's why I am asking because I have never moved them before and need an advice from someone who has done it before.

You are right with the night move. We will have to work it out how to do it. It is almost  hour journey so need to think about it before we leave.

Thank you so much.

Judy

no probs, glad to be of help.

I think most of the people on this site like myself would need an Ark to move their pets cos we all have so many.  :hello:

Not quite the same thing but i take some of my chips into the primary school where i work for the children to see.
I put them in their "travel aviary" & they love it!
They sit on the front seat of the car then when i get to school they're quite happy to go to every classroom & be the center of attention!  :toothy4:

Sometimes we have taken Chipmunks to our grandparents at Southend and we take them in a guinea-pig cage which is the biggest cage we can fit in the car with Chipmunks in and they usually stay in their nest box but i think a few have had a look around at their surroundings.

When i have transported Chippies from breeders i have them in a small animal carrier with hay and abit of food. When i brought Asriel home from Judy's he was curious and actually looked around and didn't seem upset at all. With Pearl and Abigail, they were in separate carriers and Pearl looked around a few times but Abigail stayed under the hay, for most of the journey there wasn't movement at all but near home the hay did move. Hermione stayed under the hay i don't think we saw anything of her when she was brought home from Gary's infact i wondered was she in there because there wasn't any movement at all. When i brought home Bailey from Dayle's he did have abit of a sleep but alot of the journey he was jumping around in his carrier.

So i guess Hermione and Abigail didn't travel well.

I hope the move goes well.

Hi everyone, Just wondering how you got on with the move Judy? I moved house recently myself. I moved at night. Strangely, the chisp knew it was different than the normal pop in the car and head south, like I sometimes do. We are settled in to our new house, but it took the chips about a week to relax. They seemed nervous, all except for Cybil and Uisce of course, my two friendliest chippies.

Had you any problems Judy?? Hopefully it worked out good for you  :)

I would guess a chipmunk would prefer to be moved during the day, rather than after they have gone to bed. I have noticed with some if there is a strange noise during the night it can cause them to get up, and they seem unsettled.

Alans trips with his chipmunks are the exception I think, and possibly most chipmunks could get used to travelling. Mostly though they will stay in whatever nest or hideaway you give them.

Unless you have bred the chips and they never get ill and need a trip to the vets, they don’t normally get to travel. They are very much territorial animals so their world is the world is the one they have scented out and have various stashes of food around, much like in the wild.

If your chippies aren’t used to travel and are normally shy I would suggest covering their travelling cage up. Some chippies are very outgoing, and like Alan says seem to like looking around during the trip.

If I’m taking a chippie in the car I try not to add to their stress, so I keep the radio off, not sure but I think it may help the nervous ones. I also will put my hand in their cage during the trip if they are very used to me handling them, just to try to reassure them. I wouldn’t do that with a really nervous chippie, as they tend to make for cover and keep really still. But even if they are the nervous type, always let them hear the sound of your voice, say their names, if you’re the person who feeds them. That must give them some reassurance.

At the destination if settling in to a new home I would just open the travelling cage once it’s inside their new aviary and let them make their own way out when they thought it was safe, rather than tipping them out.

The most worrying thing on a trip for me is if they don’t make a move, all sorts of things go through your mind, like have they had a heart attack or something. So it can be more stressful for the owner than the chippies.  ;D
